Sarah J. Thomas Photography ~ The Blog » South Wales Bespoke Child Photographic Portraiture

Masthead header

Yay! You’ve found my blog. This is the space that I really call home. Welcome …

My name is Sarah and I am a child photographer based in Penarth near Cardiff in South Wales (UK).

This blog is where I can show you a bit more about how I work, sneaky peeks from recent sessions and lots more about what inspires me in my day to day life.  For photographers there might even be the odd tutorial … you never know.

It’s a diary. This blog will (hopefully) help you get to know a bit more about me – after all, who I am plays a big part in Sarah J. Thomas Photography. I might not be your cup of tea but at least we’ve got that out of the way first!

Finally, this blog is interactive. I welcome comments and feedback. In fact I darn well encourage it. I’d love to hear what you think so please leave a comment or get in touch.

I hope you enjoy your visit …

PS. If you fancy delving into the past then you can always read items from my old blog here.

Feel Good Friday # 2 ~ Newborn Baby Photography

It’s been a week and a half that’s for sure and I certainly need a little pick me up. Why, oh why do school holidays always have to coincide with the arrival of a horrible cold. So zapped of all energy when I need to be all bouncy and fun. And then … with my other head … I need to design a new website for our training arm. Brain is fit to explode.

So, as I’m feeling fragile and newborn babies seem to be constantly on my mind (totally for work purposes you understand) I thought I’d post this image which I found on Pinterest this week. It made me smile …

Baby and books. Perfect. Love a shoot like this created with a bit of humour.

That is just sooo cute!

Be my valentine …

Today I am feeling the love. Not just because it’s Valentines Day but generally … lots of love. I’m a real softy at heart.

I have love for what I do, for the lovely comments that I often receive, for my customers who continue to respect how much effort, dedication, blood, sweat (and tears) that I put into my work, for my friends (old and new) but most of all love for my boys … my family.

But I have a very special love for the man in my life. He’ll never know how much he has impacted on my life, he’s made me complete, he’s the other bit of me that’s been missing for such a long time.

Let me set a scene to explain my music choice for today. Imagine the scene if you will.

A beautiful beach in Thailand, the sun is going down. The perfect setting for the kind of romance that makes you just a bit giddy really. The kind of romance you only read about in books.

We’d been told that there was a Jazz festival on the beach. Expecting a bunch of locals with guitars sat around a glowing camp fire we were unexpectedly greeted by hundreds and hundreds of tourists and locals gathered together to celebrate the magic that is Jazz. Jazz isn’t really my cup of tea but then we found Kina

Seeing Kina for the second time last week was still magical, just different. On a boat in Bristol. An intimate venue – no sand in our shoes but simply perfect all the same.

So, whilst I am feeling in a soppy mood, this one is for you my dear and anyone else truly in love …

Feel Good Friday # 1 ~ Cardiff Baby Photography

Do you know what? What with the busy Christmas period, redesigning my blog, workshop preparation and making  initial plans for my new client viewing area (more to come!) I’ve really not had the time to post many customer sessions. Very poor … very poor work indeed Sarah Thomas.

So, I gave myself a slap and decided to pull my finger out.

My Feel Good Friday (I know, not a particularly original name) posts will always feature images that make me smile. They might not always be my images but just general things that have raised the corners of my mouth and made me feel all warm inside. I figure that this (along with the obligatory Crunchie bar) is enough to get the weekend started on the right foot.

These images were captured last October (yes … I know … epic fail!) but whilst ploughing through the archives I just knew that I had to post them.  They really bring back the memories of this wonderful little girl and of me rolling around in the leaves at Cosmeston Country Park.

From a photographers point of view – just check out that depth of field. Isn’t it just dreamy and creamy? Got to love my 50mm 1.4 (swoon).

I just had to end on this one. Priceless!

Happy Friday everyone!

Newborn Photography Workshop ~ South Wales

I am SO excited that I have been jumping up and down – literally and doing periodic squeals of excitement that only dogs can hear. Why? Well I have teamed up with the my good friend, the very wonderful and talented Sarah Stone Photography to offer our very first Newborn Photography Workshop.

This has very much come about due to the demand that we both have received from photographers (both new and established) for workshops and training in our specialist areas. Sarah has a very different style to mine (check out her work) so, together we aim to be able to offer a wealth of experience in the art and business of photographing babies and children.

The aim of the initial workshop will be to focus on the skills required to sooth and pose the newborn baby with some hands on experience and the opportunity for trainees to come away with some shots for their portfolios. We will also be covering the business and marketing elements of running a successful newborn photography business.

Please note that these workshops will be very much based on safety. We will not be covering the hanging baby shots, chin on hands and Photoshop composites. We both feel that this type of newborn photography is unsafe and is not something we advocate.

The initial workshop will be held in South Wales in May 2012. Full details will be announced very, very soon. If you are keen to pre-register your interest then click here to fill in my training form. Full details will be released initially to those who have pre-registered their interest. Spaces for this intimate workshop will be very limited and are likely to fill very quickly.

But what about other workshops I hear you cry. Don’t fear. Although Sarah S will lead the newborn workshop (with very capable assistance and much contribution from myself of course!), I will be leading a workshop aimed at older children in the summer with lots of opportunity to work with props and settings enabling you to get some cracking shots for your portfolio and build your photography business.

Watch this space …

This looks fantastic. I’m just starting out and I’ve admired your work for so long. Will there be an opportunity to take pictures as well as learn?

SarahFebruary 9, 2012 - 4:00 pm

Absolutely. You’ll get the opportunity to shoot images to take away and use in your portfolio. It’s a great way for photographers looking to get into this field to build confidence, knowledge and skills so you hit the ground running whether you’re totally new or perhaps you currently work in a different area such as weddings. And … it’ll be FUN!

OK, so I cleared almost my entire agenda in May….. One question, will I be able to bring my baby boy, since I’m still breastfeeding? He is used to attending my sessions and being with my while I work, so he won’t be any trouble.

SarahFebruary 13, 2012 - 9:31 am

Thanks for your message Vicky. I’ll drop you a line directly. :)

Hi, I have filled in the form and can’t wait to hear all the details about the newborn workshop. LOVE the fact that you will be focusing on safety and not encouraging anyone to do any poses that could potentially harm a baby. x

Good clean fun

Sometimes you just have to grab your camera. My youngest son, Jim isn’t too fussed (putting it mildly) about having his photo taken. But for some reason he was in the zone today.

He was in the bath (obviously) and looked so cute and playful. He did however look slightly concerned as I climbed up on the edge of the bath, one foot either side, wobbling furiously with my camera. But, as many of my clients will testament, I tend to do what I can to get THAT shot.

Out of the bath and clean (albeit for 5 minutes!) and a bit of fun on Mummy’s bed. Got to love his fluffy hair.

He can be trouble and he’s very demanding but times like these just HAVE to be captured.

Haha, I love these! I have a son called Max who is also very demanding and troublesome but is also gorgeous (and has the same fluffy hair – love it)!
